I can has a wedding

Currently: trying out different CMS’s (I’ve tried CMS Made Simple, he has planned on creating his own system on Ruby on Rails) and wondering how to integrate several ready-made tools into it. For example the support of Google Docs, Google Maps API and Google Calendar seems to be somewhat lacking and/or lagging behind in CMSMS and is inconclusive in Drupal. Wordpress seems to have a nice Google Docs form support, but would we both be happy with it? Remains to be seen. It will be open source though, and it will be our own, with our own hosting and our own domain. Not too keen on the idea of paying someone else for hosting and designing something that looks like all the other sites.

We’ve been looking at the templating framework Bootstrap and I finally got it working fine after fighting with CSS for a day. It turned out that CMSMS just didn’t like the cut-n-paste CSS I gave it and had - without warning - cut the end part off. I was a bit annoyed by this when I finally found out about it. Anyway, the website sketch looks nice (no URL for you though!), it works fine on my phone and laptop and I think Bootstrap might be the way to go with the actual layout.

So, in attempt to keep this blog hidden from the potential wedding guests, I’ve (although my fiancé has posted a few times, and will continue to do so, hopefully) tried not to post anything that can be identified as me and mine, or ours. The reasoning being that I’d want to keep things as surprises as long as possible. I’ve shared the public URL with a few friends, or mainly my possible maid of honour and bridesmaid #1.

Still, time to tell you about some basic facts. On 29th of February I mustered all my courage, got on my knee and asked my boyfriend to marry me. I wasn’t rejected and he was spared of getting me cloth for a skirt, so we’re engaged. We later on went to a jeweller’s and commissioned a bespoke engagement ring as I had been thinking about getting engaged for a long time and hadn’t found anything that I’d like or what would suit my preferences about rings.

We haven’t decided on a date yet as we’ve not decided where the wedding is going to be. Distances are massive so that needs to be addressed first. We kinda know how is going to be our officiant - registry office first, then a secular humanist ceremony, topped off with marvellous food and fun times.

Anyway, since we need to decide on the location first, I prepared some questionnaires for people to fill in and answer their position on travelling for our wedding so we have some kind of idea who would attend. Before sending it, we need to have our wedding website in some kind of usable state, so today I’ve been mainly doing a background for it, using the pattern that will be on my engagement ring as an inspiration. It’s so geeky I’m gonna die!

In other news, Google Wedding is AMAZING as a resource, I don’t care too much about Picasa (as I use Flickr) or Google Sites (as we’re perfectly capable of doing our own thankyouverymuch) - but Google Docs, OHMYGODYES. More about it in some upcoming entry.
